1. Introduction to Vodafone

Vodafone is the third-largest mobile network operator in the UK, serving approximately 17 million mobile customers. The company introduced its first domestic fixed-line broadband offering in October 2015 after acquiring the Cable & Wireless Group in 2012. As of now, Vodafone has over 1 million broadband customers in the UK, with 500,000 of them also using Vodafone’s mobile services. With the launch of its gigafast full fibre broadband services in partnership with Openreach and CityFibre, Vodafone has expanded its presence in the UK broadband market and made the service available to 8.8 million UK homes. Vodafone Broadband is highly competitive in terms of pricing, and we have evaluated factors such as actual broadband speed performance and customer service levels in our review below. If you’re considering switching to Vodafone Broadband, take a closer look at our review and even start your order from this page.

2. Vodafone Speed Performance

Vodafone’s average broadband speed claims of 38Mbps for Fibre 1 and 67Mbps for Fibre 2 are backed up by its own research which claims that 73% of customers on Fibre 1 receive download speeds above 35Mbps and 61% of customers on Fibre 2 receive download speeds above 63Mbps. As Vodafone utilises the Openreach network for fibre broadband, its average speed claims for Fibre 1 and Fibre 2 are very similar to those of other broadband suppliers like Sky, BT, EE and Plusnet, who also use the Openreach network. For all other Vodafone Broadband products (Full Fibre 100, 200, 500 & 900) Vodafone estimates that a majority of customers will receive the relevant download speeds specified.

So, how does Vodafone’s average broadband speed claims compare against their actual real world broadband speeds? Ofcom’s UK Home Broadband Performance report (covering March 2022 and published in October 2022) lists the actual broadband speeds received by a sample of consumers who have had speed monitoring equipment installed in their homes. The report shows us that Vodafone’s Fibre 2 (67Mpbs) package had an actual real world 24-hour average speed of 64.5Mbps with a 11.9 milliesecond (ms) latency/ping. No Ofcom speed research data was available for any other Vodafone Broadband package.

It’s worth knowing that Vodafone will provide an estimate of the broadband speed you are likely to receive prior to you completing your online order for Vodafone Broadband. These speeds can vary and be impacted by things like the distance of your home from the network exchange, the number of people using the Internet, the level of use of the Internet, plus other technical and environmental factors.

7. Vodafone Broadband Package & Router Details

Vodafone offers at least 8 broadband products across 2 package types: Fibre & Pro II Fibre. Standard fibre prices start from £23 a month for average download speeds of 38Mb. Phone line rental is included in that price, as well as other standard features like Intelligent Wi-Fi. Below, we’ve provided more details on Vodafone’s standard Fibre 2 package.

8. The Vodafone Fibre 2 Package

Vodafone’s Fibre 2 package offers download speeds averaging 67Mbps, upload speeds averaging 17.8Mbps, and unlimited downloads. The Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub is twice as fast as previous versions and features 7 antennas with beamforming technology, 4 gigabit network ports for wired connections, and 2 USB ports. The hub is easy to set up and is free for all new Vodafone Broadband customers. Online security, known as Secure Net, is also provided by the Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub. This is a set of Anti-Malware and Anti-Phishing protection filters, plus Parental Controls, that can be adjusted accordingly.

9. Switching, Installation & Setup

Switching to Vodafone is straightforward. Once you’ve ordered your chosen Vodafone Broadband package online, you’ll receive a text message and an order confirmation email which will contain details of the proposed start date for your broadband service. Your broadband start date will depend on whether you have an existing phone line that Vodafone can use or whether a new phone line needs to be installed. If you have an existing Openreach phone line that can be used, your broadband start date is likely to be 16 days after you place your order. If you need a new line to be installed by Openreach or CityFibre, you will be notified of the installation date. Installation can take up to 4 hours depending upon whether it’s a fibre or full fibre installation. The latter may also involve digging a route through your driveway or garden, either way, the engineer will talk to you before any work is started.

10. Vodafone Broadband Customer Service. Satisfaction, Support & Phone Numbers

If you’re having problems with your broadband or have an account query, the Vodafone customer service team can be contacted by dialling 191 from your Vodafone mobile or by calling 0333 3040 191. Broadband issues, support, and account queries can also be discussed over Vodafone’s Live Chat service which is available on its website 7 days a week. Vodafone’s social media channels can also be used. Despite Vodafone’s extensive customer service and support, there have been issues with broadband customer complaint levels in the past. However, Ofcom’s latest report shows a much improved performance with Vodafone generating 11 complaints per 100,000 broadband customers for the period Q3 2022.

11. Our Final Verdict On Vodafone Broadband

Vodafone Broadband has many appealing aspects, such as no upfront fees, a variety of broadband options with outstanding features in the Pro II plans, affordable broadband rates, and a pledge to deploy complete fibre broadband and gigabit speeds.

However, there has been a concern about Vodafone’s broadband customer complaint levels, which were higher than average, as stated by Ofcom, until recently. Fortunately, Ofcom’s most recent Complaints report (January 2023) indicates a significantly improved performance. If Vodafone maintains this level of performance and improves their overall customer satisfaction rates, they may become a major broadband competitor to companies like BT, Sky, and Virgin Media.

FAQ and Questions By Our Users Section

There can be several reasons why your broadband connection may be slow. Some of the most common causes include:

  1. Network congestion: If many people are using the same network at the same time, it can cause network congestion and slow down your broadband speed.

  2. Distance from the exchange: If you live far away from your broadband provider’s exchange, it can result in slower broadband speeds.

  3. Interference: If there is interference from other electronic devices, such as microwaves, cordless phones, or baby monitors, it can impact your broadband speed.

  4. Outdated equipment: If your modem, router, or other equipment is outdated, it may not be able to handle faster broadband speeds, resulting in slower connections.

To check your actual broadband speed, we recommend using popular third-party speed testing services such as Ookla, Speedtest.net, or Fast.com. These services allow you to test your internet connection speed quickly and easily from any device with an internet connection.

It is definitely possible to switch your broadband internet provider at any time, but it is generally recommended to do so when your contract period comes to an end, as this will allow you to avoid any cancellation charges. If you’re not sure when your contract ends, simply get in touch with your current provider and they should be able to provide you with this information.

It’s also worth noting that if your existing provider notifies you of an upcoming price increase for your broadband package, you have the right to terminate your contract without any penalties within 30 days of receiving the notice, in accordance with Ofcom regulations.

While most parts of the UK have access to standard ADSL copper broadband with average download speeds of 10Mbps, faster fibre optic broadband options such as ‘Superfast Broadband’, ‘Ultrafast Broadband’, and ‘Full Fibre’ or ‘Gigabit capable’ Broadband can offer a significantly better experience with average speeds ranging from 36Mbps to 1Gbps (1 Gigabit per second). Currently, Superfast Broadband is available to 95% of UK homes with an average fibre speed of at least 30Mbps, while around 70% of UK homes can access Ultrafast/Gigabit Broadband with average speeds of 1Gbps, largely thanks to the Virgin Media network. Various providers including Virgin Media, Openreach (used by the likes of BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone, Plusnet & others), CityFibre (used by Vodafone, TalkTalk and others), Gigaclear and Hyperoptic are rolling out Ultrafast and Full-Fibre broadband networks with speeds capable of 1 gigabits per second (1Gbps) in different areas across the country.
